Sitting on popular Michigan Ave, The Chicago Firehouse Restaurant is popular with South Loop and Prairie District residents. Built in an old firehouse station, the restaurant has a unique dining experience. Their dishes range from pasta to seafood and steak. They offer private dining as well as happy hour in the evenings.

 

Field Museum is one of the largest museums in the world and sits in a stunning building inspired by Grecian architecture. There are various exhibits inside, ranging from space meteorites to the dinosaur Sue and “Jurassic Oceans.” The museum has traveling exhibits, so there’s always something new to visit and see. Similarly, the Shedd Aquarium has exhibits of aquatic life, from beluga whales to sharks. Learn about underwater life and the conservation efforts the aquarium is a part of. The aquarium offers various experiences, including meeting penguins and sea otters and feeding sharks or beluga whales.

 

Enjoy a walk down the Prairie Avenue Historic District, where some of the first mansions of downtown Chicago were built. The first mansion was built in 1882, laying the path for additional mansions to be built.

 

Things to Do

Being in the bustling downtown hub, South Loop and the Prairie District offer endless activities year-round. Kick off the summer months with the Millennium Park Summer Concert Series. The summer concert series sees both emerging and established artists showcased at the pavilion. Enjoy a picnic while you listen to live music.

Try new foods at the largest food festival in the world, Taste of Chicago. Beginning in 1980, the food festival continues annually where locals can enjoy different foods from all over the city. Since the South Loop and Prairie District are close to Navy Pier, residents can watch the Navy Pier Fireworks show every Wednesday and Saturday night. Beginning in May and continuing through September, locals can marvel at the show over the lake without traveling far from home. Activities continue into Sunday with the Sundays on State block party. Starting in the morning and continuing into the evening, locals can see art, and enjoy food, drinks, and local attractions since State Street is closed for the event.
